Scans MSN Messenger logs and removes offending characters

Have some or all of your MSN Messenger XML logs stopped working? Do you constantly receive the “An invalid character was found in text content” error?

If so, what’s probably occurring is your logs contain some lower-level characters from your contacts. These characters are usually generated by Messenger Plus! users (color codes, bold/font, etc.) or as something like an emoticon and then are saved in your log, preventing Messenger from being able to save any newer logs.

To meet this problem, after a few nights in C# (and some input from friends), I’ve developed ScanXMLLogs which will automatically scan and correct your Messenger XML logs in the background.  ScanXMLLogs can automatically start scanning and start in the notification area when you start the application as well as providing a full log and statistics so you can see exactly what it is and isn't modifying.

ScanXMLLogs is freeware for personal use, does not contain spyware/adware and requires the .NET Framework 1.1 to be installed (although more than likely you already have this already).
